Cellulite vs Lipedema: What's the Difference?

Cellulite vs Lipedema: What's the Difference?

They can look similar on the surface, but cellulite and lipedema are two very different conditions and understanding the difference matters for how you treat them.

What is cellulite?
Cellulite is the dimpled, uneven skin texture that appears when fat pushes through the connective tissue beneath the skin. It affects over 85% of women at some point, regardless of weight or fitness level. Hormones, genetics, and circulation all play a role.

It’s not dangerous, but it can affect confidence, and it responds well to consistent targeted treatment.

What is lipedema?
Lipedema is a chronic condition where fat accumulates abnormally usually in the legs, thighs, and hips in a way that’s disproportionate to the rest of the body. Unlike cellulite, lipedema is often painful and tender to the touch. It’s also frequently misdiagnosed as obesity or general weight gain.

Women with lipedema often find that diet and exercise have little effect on the affected areas. The root cause is structural, involving the lymphatic system and connective tissue.

Where they overlap
Both conditions are worsened by poor lymphatic drainage. Fluid retention, inflammation, and sluggish circulation make both more visible and uncomfortable. This is why lymphatic stimulation through massage, movement, or devices like the Nyxel roller is beneficial for both.

The key takeaway
If your concern is purely cosmetic, targeted treatment and consistency will get you results. If you suspect lipedema, especially if there’s pain involved, speak to a doctor. Either way, supporting your lymphatic system is a powerful first step.
