That blinding glare from headlights in the rain isn’t your eyes. It’s oil film on your glass. Here’s what causes it and how to clear it for good.
You know the moment. It’s dark, it starts to rain, and the headlights of oncoming cars stop being points of light and turn into great smears of glare spreading right across your windscreen. You squint. You lean forward. You wipe the inside of the glass with your sleeve just in case. And for a few seconds, you genuinely can’t see what’s in front of you.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not imagining it, and it’s almost certainly not your eyesight going. There’s a very ordinary explanation, and once you know what it is, it’s surprisingly easy to sort out.
What’s actually happening
Over time, a thin, greasy layer builds up on the outside of your windscreen. It comes from all the things your car drives through every day: exhaust residue, road grime, traffic film, the oily mist thrown up off wet roads, and even runoff from wax and polish. Individually none of it is dramatic. Together, it forms an invisible oily film across the glass.
In daylight you barely notice it. But at night, that film does something annoying: instead of letting light pass cleanly through, it scatters it. So when a headlight hits your windscreen, the beam doesn’t stay a tidy point of light. It spreads and blooms across the greasy layer, and you get that washed-out, blinding haze. Add rain, and it gets worse, because the water sits on top of the film and scatters the light even further.
Why normal cleaning doesn’t fix it
Here’s the frustrating part. Most people reach for the same things they always use: washer fluid, a bottle of glass cleaner, maybe a quick wipe with a cloth. And the glare comes straight back, sometimes within a day.
That’s because standard glass cleaners and washer fluids are mostly water-based. They’re great at shifting dust and loose dirt, but they don’t properly break down an oily film. Instead, they tend to move it around, thinning it in some spots and smearing it in others. That’s why you can “clean” your windscreen and still end up with that streaky, hazy finish that looks worse in low sun and headlights. You haven’t removed the film. You’ve just rearranged it.
What actually clears it
To get rid of an oily film, you need something designed to dissolve it rather than smear it. A dedicated oil film remover breaks down that greasy layer so it lifts off the glass completely, leaving the surface genuinely clean rather than coated.
The better ones go a step further and leave behind a water-repellent finish. That’s the part you really feel in the rain: instead of water sheeting across the glass and blurring everything, it beads up and rolls away, so you’re relying far less on your wipers to see clearly.
A few practical tips
• Do the outside first. Most rain-and-headlight glare comes from the exterior film. If your haze is on the inside of the glass (common in newer cars as interior plastics off-gas), that needs cleaning separately.
• Work on cool glass, out of direct sun. Product dries too fast on hot glass and leaves streaks.
• Don’t skip the wiper blades. Old, greasy blades will drag film straight back across your freshly cleaned glass.
• Reapply seasonally. Film builds up again over weeks of driving, so a top-up every few weeks keeps things clear.
